Who Are Baby Boomers?
The “Baby Boomer” generation is defined as those men and women born between 1946 and 1964.
The name “Baby Boomer” originates from the “baby boom” in the post war years as the birth rate dramatically increased as a result of life free from the threat of war and the growing prosperity with the effects of post war investment and reconstruction. There are some 17 Million Baby Boomers in the UK which itself is dwarfed by the 75 Million Baby Boomers in the US.
As the Baby Boomers reached “adulthood” or their informative years in the Sixties and Seventies they were influenced by the background of a music, dress revolution, worldwide protest movements, civil rights and women’s rights. The conformity of their parents was replaced by a strong individualism and a distrust of reliance on governments.
Many Baby Boomers were the first in their families to go to University, never having to experience the dangers of war and grew up in a climate of ever increasing prosperity and consumerism. In fact it is the Baby Boomer generation which has been largely responsible, through their creativity and business acumen, for the creation of the wealth in today’s Western economies, Their desire for individualism and style has encouraged innovation in consumer goods, communication, transport and travel.
As the Baby Boomer generation, who have helped shaped the modern world, begin to near “retirement” they will not give up this optimistic approach to life for the “gold watch and slippers” approach of their parents.
In fact retirement will now give the Baby Boomer the opportunity to do many of those things their lifestyle has not permitted them to do as often as they would like up until now. QLagoon aims to provoke and encourage Baby Boomers to do just that.
